Posted on October 09 2017
Streetwear is big business in China, and the center of it all is undoubtedly its capitalist heart, Shanghai. This year, the metropolis sees a new streetwear convention to gather brands and enthusiasts from around the region.
INNERSECT, created by industry figurehead Edison Chen and featuring a range of heavyweights from the worlds of sneakers, streetwear, hip-hop, street art and more. First announced in August, the three-day event saw massive lines form outside, clamoring for a glimpse of headliner A$AP Rocky who performed on the opening day, backed by teen rap phenom Rich Chigga.
Inside the vast venue, some of the most influential brands of the moment staked their claim with creatively imagined booths, including the likes of Fear of God, ALYX, sacai, UNDEFEATED, Know Wave, PLEASURES and Midnight Studios. Edison Chen’s own brand, CLOT, also showed its latest wares, including an exclusive collaboration with famed tattoo artist Dr. Woo made specifically for the event. Among the most elaborate booths was NikeLab, which showcased its “TEN ICONS RECONSTRUCTED” sneaker partnership with VIrgil Abloh inside a whitewashed brick-walled space. Meanwhile, Converse partnered with popular Korean indie band HYUKOH to promote the release of its Fastbreak retro sneaker.
Among the corridors of the trade fair, prominent creatives and influencers such as Matthew Williams, YOON and Eddie Huang were there to check out the sights. INNERSECT also invited prominent artists like Scott Campbell, Pauly Bonomelli, Kenneth Cappello, Daito Manabe and Kelly Marie Beeman to make art for art’s sake. BMX rider Nigel Sylvester also did a tour of Shanghai to connect the convention to the context of the city around.
Take a look below at what went down at this streetwear extravaganza, and stay tuned for INNERSECT’s next iteration in 2018.
