On March 26th 1987, Nike revolutionized footwear by introducing the legendary Air Max 1. While Nike’s Air technology wasn't new, it was famed designer Tinker Hatfield who made the controversial decision to remove a part of the midsole and expose the air pouch for all to see. This iconic feature has remained as a staple characteristic for this line of Nike footwear since.
Fast forward to March 26th 2017, and the Air Max series is as strong as ever. In celebration of the Air Max 1’s thirtieth anniversary, Nike debuted the newest member of the family - the Air VaporMax. This model takes the visible air concept to new heights – combined with the Flyknit upper, this may will be the most comfortable Air Max ever.
Leading up to this year’s Air Max Day, Nike launched the Vote Forward contest which featured 12 “RevolutionAIRS” who created their own interpretations of an Air Max. Artists from around the world were picked to work with Nike’s design team to devise concepts which were then voted on by the public. The winner of this year’s contest was Sean Wotherspoon who reinterpreted the Nike Air Max 97. As the winner, his design will be released to the public during next year’s Air Max Day!
As part of the Air Max Day celebrations, Nike opened SNEAKEASY pop-up stores in select cities around the world. Besides food and drinks, these locations featured on-site NIKEiD customization stations. Visitors also got to wear-test the latest Air VaporMax as well as learn about the history and future of Air Max from the designer’s panel.
Those who were fortunate enough to visit the La Brea Ave SNEAKEASY on Air Max Day also got to witness a surprise show from artist Travis Scott! The show was announced on Twitter an hour before the event, attracting huge crowds and shutting down the block.
Air Max Day 2017 was one for the books, we can definitely expect bigger things and more hyped kicks from Nike for next year’s celebration. Here’s to hoping that there will be a Nike SNEAKEASY pop-up store in Hong Kong in 2018! #KISSMYAIRS
